Day 5 Graphics

These articles were very helpful and made me realize what I have been doing wrong with the presentations I have presented in the past. Since I am an early childhood educator I tend to make everything "cute." I am now learning that the content is the most important part of my presentation, keep it simple, and the graphics should not distract from me, the presenter. I also need to be aware of the emotional response I will be eliciting from the audience from my presentation. The visual images that you use in the presentation tell about you.

I like the idea of using great photographs as it enhances your presentation and that it needs to relate to your material. I use real photographs with my ELL students at school and lots of realia. My students come into school with very little or no English at all. They need to see the real picture or real object to make connections with their world and develop language. I was very happy to see this mentioned in an article for our class.

Not sure of the age of your students, but is it possible to have them take the pictures (and then create presentations themselves)?

It's great that you realize the importance of photographs when explaining new concepts to ELL students. Too often, the clip art that symbolizes something for us, lacks meaning for students who are unfamiliar with the language.

It sounds like you are able to create these presentations comfortably, so maybe the next step would be allowing your students the opportunity to learn how to use the program by having them create a short PowerPoint, maybe a bio.
