Wow! I learned alot from these very informational articles tonight. It is very good for anyone working in the education field as well as in the field of technology to be knowledgeable of these laws. I was not aware that so many businessess have lost such a large amount of money with pirating.
My definition of multimedia is: A computer program or other technology that integrates the use of graphics, text, animation and sound into a presentation.
I really like as well as agree with the statement that multimedia demands adaptability. I need to be able to adapt to the programs I am learning how to use, so I can adapt them to the needs of the students in my classroom or any audience I am presenting to.

Your comment about not being aware of the amount of loss is echoed in many of our minds. I think that the fact that it is intellectual property and thus can't be physically stolen has somehow minimized the loss for many. We need to get this concept of "stealing" across to our students if we want to stop plagiarism and copyright theft.
Your comment about being able to adapt to the ever changing world of technology is right on the mark.
I recently participated in the PASS program (Partnering for Student Success) where as group of educators, we toured area businesses and met with their executives to discuss workplace standards. On the top of their list for success in the workplace was adaptability!
As a h.s. teacher, I can see the benefit of introducing multi-media into my lessons as an additional opportunity to expose my students to the need to also be flexible.
In terms of copyright laws, until people are public prosecuted, I'm afraid it isn't going to impact our society. I have friends who are artists and they have actually had their designs "stolen" and have found them being marketed on the internet. Sadly, their designs are being mass marketed out of the country. I think in this case, this is the role of government to protect it's citizen, which is why the Founding Fathers including copyright into our Constitution.
You're right about adaptability and it does take time. Learn one program at a time and utilize it over and over until you feel comfortable with it before you begin another. Otherwise, it can be overwhelming.
